Internet Radio

Internet radio is the transmission of streaming audio services through the Internet as opposed to traditional radio waves. The process was first created in the mid-1990s, but has rapidly grown in popularity in recent years. Revenue from internet radio was estimated to be less than $50 million in 2003, but grew by a factor of ten to $500 million by 2006. Increasing popularity and revenues have also seen increasing squabbles over fair royalties for the content creators.

Even if Royalties for Web Radio Fall, Revenue Remains Elusive
Less optimistic impressions of internet radio revenue depict even programs backed by large companies, such as AOL, struggling to stay afloat. Furthermore, listeners apparently are quick to reject advertisements, although web tv services such as Hulu have been successful with including brief commercials alongside free programming.
